We are based on a school site in the heart of Shirley and cater for families of a range of backgrounds and needs. Our staff have a wealth of experience and knowledge in early years and are passionate about supporting children and families.
We work closely with Wordsworth Primary School, joining in with celebrations, supporting transitions for those going to school and sharing ideas and knowledge in relation to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
We are fortunate enough to have 2 lovely outside areas of which children have access to on a daily basis and we are also able to use the school field on occasions. We have good connections with the local community including the library, emergency services and health visitors.
At Rainbow Pre-school we strive to offer every child the best learning experience and aim for them to build on these early learning experiences, to develop into confident & competent lifelong learners. We provide this by offering a curriculum that is tailored to every child.
We base our curriculum on three 20th Century psychologists who are still inspirational theorists today. Together their ideas cement our approach; creating the best environment within which children learn through play, enabling children to fulfil their full potential.
Abraham Maslow, believed in providing the basics in life; food, water, warmth & shelter, then building on the basics with a safe & secure environment, offering a secure key person who understands the child & finally promoting the child’s self-esteem.
Jean Piaget, placed great emphasis on the child as an individual, learning through first hand experiences through exploration & investigation. Our playrooms are set up to encourage children to be independent learners, who are able to self-select activities & resources.
Lev Vygotsky, identified that children naturally learn from interacting & watching more able children. This supports our practice for mixing children’s age groups, rather than segregating them.
Building on these theorists findings we offer a curriculum that balances child led activities with adult directed activities, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn, develop and thrive.

All of our staff receive and refresh training on crucial and relevant topics including Paediatric First Aid, Safeguarding and Food Safety and Hygiene and are fully supported in their continued professional development.
We use an online learning journal called Tapestry to record all of our children’s learning and development. Parents/carers are set up with their own accounts with Tapestry so that they can view their child’s journal and share updates.
